Back in the 1950s, before air travel had become so prevalent in America, road trips were the way to get across the country. After World War II ended, the US had a multitude of resources freed up that could then be used to manufacture cars and lay interstate highways. This, along with a growing prosperity for middle-class families, helped form the road trip trend that still exists today.
