Nice Post Brian! I agree that location-based apps are changing the world but this is only the beginning...

With great rise in social media network by every individual and business the evolution of various apps have raised and most of them are really appealing. I am really enjoying and loving many of my iPhone Apps. Some of the best I use are Textfree Unlimited, Flight Tracker, TweetDeck.

@Tanner - this is very true. It's a pet peeve of mine. If social media is a toddler at best in the grand scheme of the Internet, the potential within geolocation is an infant. Feeling a blog post coming on :)

Is it just me or have most location-based applications missed the point?

Gowalla is great, I absolutely love it, but the social aspects are REALLY lacking. Foursquare is the same. It's fun, and it's great to compete for "top place" with friends, but I have yet to make any new friends through the apps, despite encountering several people who frequent the same places I do.

There are a lot of uses for these apps (Locavore is a favorite of mine), but I feel like the social aspects of these "games" are missing.
