Love the comparison between social networking and high school, you have some compelling points! Perhaps because the major social networking sites (especially Facebook) are so much like high school I prefer the niche social networking sites.

Hi,

I was just discussing this as I experienced my first Stumbleupon band of bullies. Shana got rid of some horrible blogger just today, go you. I think it is exactly like high school but worse since there is the anonymity. Those that had it rough in HS are probably the worst, or perhaps the bullies just continue to bully. SU is my favorite SN and to find the group “Elite Hater’s Mafia” was a bit disheartening. Vicious language and sentiments and outright haters. A microcosm of the world perhaps. Shana, talk about a trip down memory lane! I do wonder what today’s kids would say about it, considering Facebook and all are such an integral part of their social… umm, life.

One direction I took the liberty of extending your analogy to was to activism, political clubs, etc. How did we do it in school and what does it mean for social media? (Shameless plug) Answers on my recent blog post…

That is awesome and so very true! I never thought of it like that but it is a great analogy. I’ve done the same thing on Stumble Upon, getting rid of those I no longer want to have as friends. Why they only allow 200 is beyond me.

Sorry to be boring but for me social networking is so much more important that which High School and what year you were in and who you once knew. I think SN is much more important but I agree that story telling and use of metaphor is the real secret of getting into people’s heads.
